[Matt came to visit Ken literally every night from the day of the attack onward. He sat next to the bed with two coffees just in case Ken woke up and ignored weird looks from the nurses who'd seen him in for the exact same reason as Ken was in now.
He read books for his English class the first two or three days before that gets boring and he finishes them both. Then he brings his PSP. Then he finishes the game he brought.
Then he plays the game sitting in a chair upside down because he's eight inside and worried and bored. He's sure Ken will get better, he's also bored. He finishes the game upside down and starts to draw dumb things on random sheets of paper lying around, and gets scolded by a nurse when he accidentally scribbles on something important in a daze.
Generally, Matt is very, very bored. But he won't leave Ken's side until he gets better. He might not be his leader in this life, but he's Ken's friend, and he at least owes him that much.]
[He's asleep, unmoving, until midday of the fifteenth. If Matt's been there for as long as he has been he's probably seen the kid's dad come in every day, during his breaks and after his shifts, offering Matt a ride home every time and lots and lots of thank yous for looking out for his son, even if Mr. Amada found it strange, the first few times, why someone who's really just a tutor would worry about a kid so much. (But he wasn't going to complain; no one else visited Ken besides Mr. Amada's girlfriend who came with him after work one night).
But Ken wakes up right around lunchtime on Saturday, when he makes a small groaning sound and rolls on his side, blinking awake looking stupidly around. He's sore. Where is he? He's hungry. He's thirsty.]
[Matt promises it's nothing weird--He's the one who got Ken home, after all. He wants to make sure he's okay after all the snake stuff. He feels a lot of responsibility for it.
Though he doesn't tell Mr. Amada that it's because he's the reason Ken's in a coma in the first place.
When Ken moves, Matt straightens in surprise. And then he sinks into his chair in relief and smiles.]
[I forgot the nickname until now but Papada will accept that explanation and he'll bring Matt food whenever he comes to check on Ken after work.
Ken is having a hard time figuring out why he's at the hospital. Why? What happened? There were snakes, and then there was Nemesis, and he was really sleepy but why would he need to be--
Not yet. [He's sore. He doesn't want to get up. He rolls so he's facing Matt, and after a moment's silence he pulls up the blanket to his chin as he frowns uncomfortably.]
... You said those things we can summon -- Personas. You said they're for fighting monsters, right?
They're called shadows, yeah. [Matt will stand an straighten things up for him to make sure he's comfortable. Pillows are set right, blanket isn't twisted.] I think... we're the only ones who can summon them, right now.
She wasn't my mom. [But he's shaking a little under Matt's hand.] But that's what I saw. And I don't think he had one of these when it happened. But he did at one point, and I do, too. She's called Nemesis.
[He pulls a second blanket up over him from the foot of the bed. Just in case.
He frowns, though. Nemesis is the goddess of revenge. Orpheus is the the demi-god who traveled to hell to save his wife. Thanatos, the personification of death. Maybe he shouldn't have picked up the book on Greek myth. Dead parents, and people asking to be killed. This is bullshit.]
I don't think what we're going to find out is going to get any better, Ken.
[!!! Papa! Ken's eyes go a little wide and he looks almost happy, before he pushes himself up and looks around!
And his eyes fall on the empty space around them before he sees a clock and realizes the time, and after a moment's look of disappointment he blinks and sighs and settles back down. Matt wouldn't've let him talk about Persona if there was anyone else there. Duh.]
... Thanks. He didn't ask you anything weird, did he?
[He's really tempted to roll over and bury his face into the mattress but he turns his head to look at Matt and frowns.]
Hi Dad, I'm your son and I can shoot monsters out of my head and she's the goddess of revenge and she can smite things with lightning and has a chance at insta-kill but she can also heal people. No biggie.
